What to Bring When Buying a Car

Great question! You’ll need several documents on hand, all of which will help speed up the process. 

First and foremost, you’ll need your driver’s license. Make sure it’s current, as an expired license may prevent you from driving off with your new-to-you ride. The dealership will want to make a copy of it for their records. 

Next, have proof of auto insurance. Contact your insurance agent before you purchase your next ride to see what you need to do to add the new vehicle to your policy. If you’re a first-time buyer and need insurance, the dealership may be able to help you. 

Bring any specials or trade offers with you. If you have a vehicle to trade, you can use the offer and apply it to the down payment of your new vehicle. Trading a car into a dealership would require you to bring the title, vehicle registration, and any service records you have. 

Lastly, bring your payment method, whether cash, a check, or an auto loan. If you want to lease or finance your car through a dealership, they can walk you through that process. 

You can do several things to prepare for a successful car purchase. Before coming to the dealership, know what kind of car you want and its associated costs (fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc.). You can also contact different insurance companies to determine what it would cost to insure the car.
